He will apologise for his behaviour in his private life but is expected to avoid making the public mea culpa that many believed was required for him to begin repairing his reputation.

McIlroy suspected Woods had timed his return to draw attention from an event backed by one of the first sponsors to withdraw their support for the player. "I suppose he might want to get something back against the sponsor that dropped him," McIlroy said, having fought back from being four holes down with six play to beat Kevin Na in the first round in Tucson.

Woods disappeared from public view after reports of several extra-marital affairs began to emerge in November, following a minor car crash that he was involved in outside his home. He has released only two public statements since the accident, the second in December 11 when he announced on his website that he would take an indefinite break from golf.

The allegations also led to AT&T ending their sponsorship deal with Woods, while Gillette and Gatorade cut back their association with him. However, Max Clifford, the publicist, ruled out claims that Woods's marketing potential has taken an irrevocable hit, suggesting it will return to close to its formidable peak once he returns to competition.

"Nike have stayed with him, two or three of his major sponsors have stayed with him, because they don't think his activities away from the golf course will upset their clients," Clifford said.

"The market research is very thorough. As long as Tiger Woods continues to be the greatest golfer in the world, the hundreds of millions will continue to flood in and he will be the biggest attraction anywhere he goes and plays golf.

"There are people in America who have been offended by his off-the-course activities, but in terms of his success and his earning prowess, as long as he continues to be incredibly talented on the golf course it won't make any difference - people want to see the best, and he is."

Mark Steinberg, Woods' manager, revealed details of the press conference, explaining that it would take place at 4pm GMT at the TPC Sawgrass clubhouse in Ponte Vedra Beach before a small group of friends and associates. "Tiger plans to discuss his past and his future and he intends to apologise for his behaviour," Steinberg said in a prepared statement.

John Cook, the veteran professional and a mentor of Woods, has turned down an invitation to the event, insisting he did not know what his friend would announce. "I can't even speculate what he might come out with," Cook said. "I'm just happy that he is [speaking publicly]. I've missed him and it's great to have him back. We have no idea what his plans are."

Wozniacki survives wobble in Dubai Tennis tournament

DUBAI — Top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki survived an edgy wobble before reaching the last 16 of the Dubai Open on her first visit to the two million dollar tournament.

The charismatic Dane had to summon resilience and level-headedness to fight back from 1-5 down against an in-form Dominika Cibulkova to win 6-2, 7-6 (7-2).

The buoyant and mobile Slovakian belied her world number 30 ranking to get the better of some athletic baseline exchanges in the middle of the match, and was within two points of taking the second set while serving at 5-2.

"I was getting a bit nervous," admitted Wozniacki. "But I went out there and I fought and didn't give up, and felt like I was in there all the time. So I thought it might be just a matter of time.

"It's a bit difficult to play here because the ball fies a bit, but the courts are pretty slow. You have to get used to it."

Wozniacki did that by making one break of serve for 3-5 with some carefully controlled, yet still forcing drives; then she broke again for 5-5 with the help of a successful appeal to the Hawkeye electronic replay system.

Cibulkova's bubbling baseline presence had pressured Wozniacki into a counter-hit which looked as though it might have landed long, and was called out.

But the Dane's appeal to the computerised replay showed the ball just clipping the outside edge of the baseline, preventing her from slipping to 30-love down, and enabling her to get the point replayed.

Had this not happened Wozniacki might well have found herself a coupls of minutes later at 40-30 and set point down rather than of 30-40 ahead in that crucial Cibulkova service game.

Instead Wozniacki converted that break point for 5-5 with an enterprisingly early backhand cross court return of serve which landed plumb on the sideline.

By the time the tie-break came along two games later she had re-acquired enough ground-stroking momentum to carry her steadily to a hard-fought victory.

Wozniacki next plays Shahar Peer, who yesterday became the first Israeli woman to compete in a UAE state, and who scored a high quality win for the second successive day.

Having beaten the 13th seeded Yanina Wickmayer in the first round, Peer now outplayed Virginie Razzano, last year's runner-up, by 6-2, 6-2.

The commitment required of Peer's effort was underlined by her once again overcoming the distractions of careful security, with special arrangements for accommodation, transport, changing and the scheduling of her matches.

"I am very happy with my performance," said the Israeli. "It was a difficult day for me yesterday because I had two matches and, you know, a lot of emotions, so I am very happy I could be out there and playing very very good tennis today."

However a scheduling dilemma arose from her victory, with the tournament organisers having to decide whether or not they should now schedule Peer on to the more conspicuous venue of the centre court.

Daytona 500 wants to get revving again

It seems appropriate that this Daytona 500 falls on Valentine's Day, the day NASCAR hopes its fans will fall back in love with its sport.

The Great American Race is NASCAR's great American opportunity to rekindle a dying love affair.

NASCAR must transform what has become the mundanely monotonous Dulltona 500 back into the deliriously dramatic Daytona 500.

NASCAR entered the American sporting consciousness in 1979 when CBS first televised the race wire-to-wire on a day when the entire East Coast, because of a blizzard, was stuck in the house watching TV.

That historic, histrionic race ended with Cale Yarborough and the Allison boys wrecking each other on the final lap and brawling on the backstretch as the ultra-popular Richard Petty breezed by for the victory. That was America's first real taste of the rowdy, howdy world of stock-car racing.

Well, guess what? When the gentlemen (sorry, no Danica) start their engines at 10 a.m. PST, the East Coast will still be blanketed by the record-breaking snowfall of a few days ago and bracing for yet another snowstorm tomorrow.

Meanwhile, NASCAR is doing everything it can to return to its "If you ain't rubbin', you ain't racin' " roots that captivated the country three decades ago.

The powers that be are finally starting to listen to those who matter most: the fans and the drivers. NASCAR has always been the most autocratic of all the major sports. The France family founded it, funded it and ran it with an iron fist for three generations. And if you didn't like the way they did things -- too bad.

But there's an old proverb: "Arrogance diminishes wisdom." And that's what happened to NASCAR. Because of the sport's booming success in the 1990s and early 2000s, NASCAR thought it could do no wrong. Profits took precedent over product. NASCAR drove so fast into the future, its past was left choking on the dust.

"The days of exciting races at Daytona and Talladega [NASCAR's two superspeedways] are over," Dale Earnhardt Sr. said of all the changes to adjust the aerodynamics, regulate the engines and slow down the cars. "It's no fun anymore. They finally got it like Indy-car racing."

Turns out the Intimidator was right. The Daytona 500 turned into a bunch of puttering, powerless cars lollygagging around the track single file, afraid to get out of line for fear they would get shuffled to the rear of the pack. There was so little passing that NASCAR might as well have painted double yellow lines down the middle of Daytona's famous 2.5-mile tri-oval.

It's no wonder ticket sales have plunged and TV ratings declined in recent years. Even before the economy went into the tank, NASCAR had begun to alienate its fan base.

And that brings us to Sunday's Daytona 500, where the sport will attempt to drive its way back to the future. Speed will increase with the bigger restrictor plates. Aggressiveness will escalate now that NASCAR has legalized bump-drafting.

Robin Pemberton, NASCAR's vice president of competition, put it best during a preseason news conference when he sent this message to the drivers heading into the 2010 season:

"Boys, have at it."

The name, since I was young enough to appreciate music to the point where I was memorizing names, stuck in my head throughout the Jackson 5; and I was one of the first in line to get my Thriller album, which is still in vinyl, sitting in my closet, where it is a tribute to 27 years of history. I can think of very few who did not attempt to do the Moon Walk as I grew up - hell, I can recall a few weeks before hearing about his death, someone at work tried to do it here and we all laughed as his sneakers got caught on the carpet. A bunch of 30 and 40-somethings all laughing and remembering the childhood awe that we felt about him, his music, his glittered glove!

Regardless of news reports his sex life, or his growing eccentric behavior...his ruining his relationship with Paul McCartney by trying to buy the Beatles songs... I think most people, although they would joke about him and his possible sexual desires for pre-teen boys, all felt in their hearts that it was more about a man who was torn from his childhood and wanted playmates...and could only relate to children; and who had major mental problems. There are priests and such who have raped boys, but I don't think that Michael Jackson ever raped anyone - and I have rarely, despite jokes - met anyone who really thinks he did either.

On the day of his recent death, and the day after, an ex-boyfriend began texting me all of these jokes about MJ and his penchant for young boys; then the texts escalated into making fun of his face and his surgeries. I had to write him back and tell him to please STOP - it wasn't funny. The man was DEAD. Three children are without a father, and a world who grew up with him as the center of their musical universe as a child had that man taken away...a man who had become a shell of what he once was. My ex's curt response was "I love the way he was hated by Paul McCartney who issued a press release he loved him and for a decade he was called a child molester but now he's a saint...No one I know is upset (that he is dead) at all."

Well, for starters, this explains why this person and I are no longer dating...but what really gets me is that although some might call him a child molester, I would have to say: look at his interviews. When asked if kids were sleeping in his bed with him and having sleep-overs, he would reply enthusiastically, "Yes!" and talk about all the fun they had. He went to bed watching cartoons. A person I know, who worked in shwanky hotel that MJ stayed at one night said that he called room service. When she asked what he wanted, thinking he wanted food, he asked her to tell him a bedtime story because he couldn't sleep.

I ask you: who can't look at the man and see that he was just trying to re-live his childhood, one that he never was allowed to really have? He was troubled, yes; had mental problems, yes; but although some of us had a good laugh at some of the issues that were going on and his odd behavior, we need to look at the brilliant boy, the brilliant young man, who did indeed become the King of Pop and created a legacy that will go into history for all the good he did.

And what my darling, empathy-filled (I hope the sarcasm is dripping as I type) ex seems to forget is that even people who are seen as twisted at times, and even when there is anger in relationships involved, people will still mourn the untimely death of such a brilliant star who was so troubled that he only weighed 112 at his death. I mean, hell - I will actually mourn when Robert dies...which, I cannot say he would do for me, or anyone for that matter. But that is a whole other post.

Michael - thank you for the good times. I'm so sorry that you were so unhappy. I wish you could have been happier...and hopefully the Neverland you were seeking is now in your hands and around you. Rest peacefully.

MANILA - Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao has entered another list that ranks powerhouse celebrities, further cementing his status as a global sports icon.

But this time, Pacquiao ranked higher than the likes of Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Tiger Woods in the 2009 AskMen.com Top 49 Most Influential Men.

The world’s best pound-for-pound fighter took the No. 24 spot after gaining an overall score of 82.1. He received a score of 86.2 from the fans and 77.9 from the AskMen.com editors.

“I am humbled and honored to have been selected as one of 2009's Top 49 Most Influential Men,” said Pacquiao in a statement posted on AskMen.com. “It's incredible to be included among such an esteemed list.”

Pacquiao’s second-round knockout of Britain’s Ricky Hatton last May 2 was given special mention in the Filipino boxer’s page in the online magazine list.

“We generally aren’t intimidated by guys who are 5-foot-6 and 130 pounds, but Manny Pacquiao is a definite exception,” stated AskMen.com.

“The People’s Champ” was earlier named the No. 22 most influential person in the world in Time Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People.”

He was also in the “Forbes Celebrity 100” which listed the most powerful celebrities in the world. He was ranked 57th.

Moreover, he was part of “The World's Highest-Paid Athletes” list of Forbes Magazine where he was tied for the No. 6 spot ($40 million) with James and golfer Phil Mickelson.

Honor

Aside from Pacquiao, NBA superstar Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers said he was honored to be included in the list.

“I would like to thank all the AskMen.com readers for voting for me,” he added.

Bryant occupied the 33rd spot while NBA MVP James ranked 42nd.

Tiger Woods, the first athlete to earn $1 billion, was at No. 30.

Other athletes who ranked lower than Pacquiao include Lance Armstrong (No. 49), Jenson Button (No. 48), Dwyane Wade (No. 43), Andy Roddick (No. 35) and Cristiano Ronaldo (No. 28).

Roger Federer and Usain Bolt, meantime, ranked higher than Pacquiao at No. 8 and No. 2, respectively.

Meanwhile, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White, was at the 10th spot while mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Georges St-Pierre was voted the No. 36 most influential man.

Greatest impact

According to AskMen.com, this year’s list is composed of “men who had the greatest impact on how other men behave, dress, buy, and think.”

The readers voted for the men who influenced them the most from about 200 candidates. AskMen.com averaged out the over 500,000 votes with the ratings of its staff.

This year’s list was topped by Don Draper, the protagonist of television series “Mad Men.”

Other entrants who made it to the list came from entertainment, technology and politics. US President Barack Obama, the 2008 most influential man, was ranked third.

On the 7^th of December Google began the first phase of offering a real-time search capability, incorporating Twitter feeds into search results. As way of keeping a finger on the pulse of news and comment, it has certainly made many people sit up and pay attention – not least of whom is Tiger Woods.
Real-time Tops Rankings

The Twitter community has latched onto the Tiger Woods story with a vengeance; as of the 10^th of December any search for ‘Tiger Woods’ also brings up a scrolling ‘Latest Results’ section along with standard website listings. As well as a significant amount of Twitter feeds, there are a great deal of other new stories and articles being brought up too.

The quality of these ‘news’ sources varies a great deal, ranging from broadsheet website articles to cheeky Twitter jokes aimed squarely at Tiger Woods’ and his recent alleged foray into the world of minor car crashes and bouts of infidelity. While many organisations are taking advantage of the Tiger Woods column inches – it is the relentless Twitter feeds which have capably demonstrated how real-time search can work as regards the hot issues.

Reputation Management

Google has also made deals with both Facebook and Myspace, which should see even more feeds added to the real time mix. For those charged with reputation management, the fact that a single person’s potentially negative opinion broadcast on any of these feeds can trump a long established website – albeit for a short period – means their job has just got much more challenging.

This access to the very latest Twitter feeds could arguably gauge immediate public reaction on a subject better than anything else. These uncensored (relatively) gut reactions can be cruel, funny or enlightening – but because of the immediacy of Twitter, the voices of normal people are brought to the world instantly. There are few newspaper editors propagating any particular view – instead, there are thousands of ordinary people with real opinions, sharing them with each other and the web.

Tiger Woods has found himself at the centre of the very first real-time storm, but there are likely to be many larger stories ahead that will find voice on Twitter, Facebook and others. At the very least, topical jokes will spread around the globe faster than ever before.

In a recent issue of Esquire Magazine they dug into the Tiger Economy. We already told you that Tiger Woods is currently worth more than $650 million and climbing! Woods earned $100 million alone last year. It is still unbelievable that this man has already surpassed the financial net worth of the most famous athlete on the planet! Michael Jordan. But we are going to provide some further insight on the enormous wealth of Tiger Woods.

Tiger was recently in Dubai playing a tournament and shooting Gillette commercials and designed his first golf course as a part of an exclusive development called Tiger Woods-Dubai. He is reported to be getting anything up to $45 million for just putting his name on the project.

His list of endorsements read like this; Accenture, American Express, Buick/General Motors, TAG Heuer, Gillette, NetJets, Electronic Arts and of course Nike. Nike will not disclose how much their contract with Woods is, but his 1st contract with them was reported to be $40 million and the 2nd $100 million over 5 years, and Bob Wood who is president of Nike Golf says “that anything less than $200 million for 7 years wouldn’t be exciting anyone.”

Tiger Woods Takedown Reported Ordered By CIA

An interesting FSB report circulating in the Kremlin today states that the American Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is behind an unrelenting media assault upon US golf legend Eldrick Tont Tiger Woods [photo top left with his Swedish model wife Elin Nordegren] and had ordered his takedown in an effort to greater fuel their efforts to ignite a race war these forces believe is needed in order to socially re-engineer the United States as it nears total economic collapse.

The startling revelations in this report are reported by the FSB to have been released to Russian Glavnoye Razvedyvatel’noye Upravleniye (GRU) agents posted at the Russian Embassy in Washington D.C. this past week by an associate of the head of the American private military force known as Blackwater (now known as Xe Services LLC), Erik Prince, who had just been outed by the CIA as being one of their main operatives involved in a covert plot to assassinate enemies of the United States.

So angry was Prince over his outing by the CIA, that aside from releasing previously secret CIA intelligence to the GRU he blasted the American spy agency by publicly stating to the US magazine Vanity Fair, “I put myself and my company at the CIA’s disposal for some very risky missions, but when it became politically expedient to do so, someone threw me under the bus.”

To the reason behind the CIA’s targeting of Tiger Woods, this report continues, is the deliberate demoralization of America’s Black raced population by the destruction of one of their most esteemed idols by the racially stereotyped depiction of him as an out of control and oversexed negro man unable to assimilate among whites.

Even worse, this report further states that the main target behind the media destruction of Woods is President Obama, whom the CIA has calculated will suffer increasing alienation from his Nations white population (who number 75% of the American population compared to a black population of just 12.4%) by his being compared with Woods as both Obama and Woods are viewed as the two most popular of all Black Americans and reinforcing white Americans belief that Black men just cant control themselves.

New reports from the United States are showing that these CIA actions against Obama are indeed working as a just released Gallup Poll finds his approval rating falling below 50% among all Americans for the first time of his Presidency, and among white people alone falling to the chilling low level of just 39%.

To the disdain held by the CIA against Obama we can see evidenced by a report from a former member of the CIA’s Directorate of Operations named Kent Clizbe who states in an article titled CIA Counterterrorism Expert: Obama and Holder ‘At War’ with Agency that the Holder/Obama Global War on the CIA has only just begun.

Not being understood by the American people, however, is that Obama’s war against the CIA is deemed vital to the survival of the black peoples of America who have been under an unrelenting assault by this spy agency for over 40 years and who have pumped literally hundreds of Trillions of dollars worth of drugs into America’s Black communities (and reaping Trillions in profits) from their vast narcotics networks of cocaine from Colombia and opium from Afghanistan.

To the horrific destruction of American Blacks by the CIA it should be noted that the courageous investigative reporter Gary Webb first brought the insidiousness of this spy agencies actions in a 20,000 word, three-part investigative series titled Dark Alliance written for his then publisher San Jose Mercury News, but who under pressure from the US government stopped their publication of Webb’s articles, none of which were ever reported by the mainstream US propaganda media. On December 10, 2004, Webb was found dead with two gunshot wounds to his head, which was ruled a suicide.

So successful has the CIA’s genocidal destruction of the Black population of America been that aside from having the Worlds largest number of their citizens in prisons (Land of the Free?), the Black population of the US is jailed at a rate of 3,138 black males per 100,000 against 451 per 100,000 of white males and leading Human Rights Watch to warn in a 2008 report that fully 11% of the Black male population of the US were behind bars, and at just 12.4% of the American population they now make up nearly 55% of all American prisoners.

It is also interesting to note in this report that the CIA backed American tabloid newspaper National Enquirer is reported to have broken the scandalous stories about Woods, and which is important in that this tabloid was one of the main targets of the US Military retaliatory strike against the CIA following the attacks on September 11, 2001, when its headquarters building in Boca Raton, Florida was infected by the deadly anthrax botulism killing a photo editor named Robert Stevens who became the first death in what is now known as the 2001 Anthrax Attacks.

To one of the most fearful conclusions of this report it states that with Woods destruction by scandal nearly complete, Obama will become so weakened among American white people that his effectiveness to govern will be destroyed, a most grim outlook especially when viewed in the light of the Global ratings agency Moody’s Investor Service now warning that the United States credit rating is in danger of being downgraded for the first time in its history and the US government also warning that their entire economy is in danger of collapse because their citizens are saving their money instead of spending it, and in an economy based not on making things but on consuming is vitally important.

Most unfortunately for these American people in all of these events is their utter failure to remember their own history, especially the events of the dark Great Depression year of 1933 when another of their Presidents, Franklin Roosevelt, when facing off against these evilest of forces was nearly deposed by coup called The Business Plot led by Prescott Bush (the father of one President, the grandfather of another) and which sought to join a new Fascist led United States with that of Nazi Germany which had, likewise in 1933, saw the seizure of their government by the US backed and financed Adolph Hitler.

To if Obama, like Roosevelt before him, will be able to withstand and survive the war being waged against him it is not in our knowing. What is in our knowing though, is that unlike Roosevelt, Obama now governs a population of Americans of whom the majority have been reduced to nothing more than idiots and imbeciles and, like the peoples of Nazi Germany before them, are totally uncaring and blinded to the mass genocide of their Black population that has been happening right before them.

Martina Hingis:

Martina Hingis (born September 30, 1980 in Slovakia) is a former World No. 1 Swiss tennis player. Known as the "Swiss Miss", she has won five Grand Slam singles titles (three Australian Open, one Wimbledon, and one US Open). Agnieszka Radwanska is becoming more popular each day that goes by and here is another interesting interview with the Polish tennis star from Gala Magazine.

Radwanska enter this season into the top 10 elite and wants to stay there for a long time. She is very nice going girl, down to earth and knows what she wants.
She is also very hard working and even she was won more that $1.5 million in tournament prices she considers herself a normal girl who likes to spend money on cloth but also invests for her future.

Gala: You are young, beautiful, talented, and rich. You can have everything what you could only desire. Millions haven't spoilt you?

AR: I feel like a normal girl. That's right, there is a satisfaction that I have my own money, I can go to a shop and buy myself even something expensive. Certainly, this is my own money, but I don't squander it, I treat it with respect. When making bigger investments I ask my parents for advice. Our investments are joint enterprises. I hope that in a year the amount in my bank account will double.

Gala: What do you invest in?

AR: I've bought for example a big apartment in the centre of Kraków.

Gala: I heard that you spend a fortune on clothes?

AR: Oh, yes! I spend a lot on fads. Not a fortune, perhaps, but I like shopping, and brand names. I take the labels, the quality, but also the price into consideration. My favourite stores: Armani Exchange, Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein...

Gala: Have you got a little black dress in your wardrobe?

AR: Sure, not just one, but rarely do I wear high-heels with it. My tired legs must rest. I prefer a smart sporty style.

Gala: Do you have time for shopping at all?

AR: When you lose the first match in a tournament, then already next day there is time for shopping or for sightseeing. Unfortunately, every year tournaments are in the same places. And once I visit a town, I don't return there. Once is enough. When you visited all the world, you want to return home as quickly as possible.

Gala: I wonder how did you manage to finish school?

AR: During the last two years in lycée , (the most prestigious type of high school) I had an individual study program, I passed Matura exams (the graduation exams in a lycée) last year.

Gala: Was it difficult?

AR: A monstrous effort. I had to study long into the night, and to get up even at 5 am. One training before the lessons, afterwards the school, and then I slept for about 5 hours to be able to study in the evenings. It was hard for me, I was irritated because I played as much as I always had, and I had 90% absence at school. I don't know how but nevertheless I passed the Matura exam. I was supposed to pass them this year, but I was sent to school one year sooner as a 6-year girl when we had returned with parents from Germany in 1995. My sister also has an individual study program and she will be passing her Matura exam next year. In professional tennis those who pass Matura exams can be counted on fingers of one palm, most are satisfied with a trade school (the lowest grade type of high school) or a gymnasium (a type of junior high school).

Gala: Robert Kubica (a top Formula 1 driver) gave up on school. You - didn't. Congratulations. Now you have more time for trainings.

AR: Yes, I have three trainings a day, two tennis ones and the third one is general: jogging, swimming, gym, aerobics.

Gala: Looking at the body shape of your father who is also your coach, you wouldn't say he jogs with you.

AR: No, surely not. I jog with another coach, Dad only trains tennis. Additionally, I've been busy not long ago preparing for a driving test.

Gala: The first attempt at getting the driver's license was unsuccessful.

AR: I failed the theory part, before I even could sit behind the wheel. I was doing a commercial all day and I couldn't predict that it would take so long, all day. I didn't prepare for the test. I just thought: I will give it a try. And I failed.

Gala: Tell us truthfully, what do you think about your father: a coach, a boss, a hangman, an animal trainer, a torturer? He puts you through a wringer on the court.

AR: An animal trainer... (laughing). No, I'm joking. I think about him as a dad-coach. Well, formerly the parents decided about everything, we didn't have a lot to say as children but now it's changed a bit. Everyone has his opinion, we look for compromise. It is not so, that someone is a tamer and rules. I turned 18 on March 6, 2007. I am adult. I decide about many things myself. About everything, in fact.

Gala: More a coach than a father, or more a father than coach?

AR: Hard to say. All my life he has been more of a coach. Since the very beginning, the first tour, the first tournament, at every stage.

Gala: Has he never been too strict for you?

AR: Sometimes he was harsh. But this is professional sport. Something for something. I remember when I was winning all the tournaments in Poland for 10 year old, and afterwards, then for 14 year old, I was enjoying mainly the rewards. I very much enjoyed the cups.

Gala: Surely they occupy a lot of space in your maiden room?

AR: Together with my sister's -- nearly 300 of them, plus medals, and diplomas. They take up all the wall. They are beautiful!

Gala: Aren't you eager to put them in order, to throw away some of them?

AR: No, never. In the living-room on we have a glass wall back-lighted lightened by halogen bulbs. When you turn on the light, the cups looks divinely.

Gala: Who does find energy to dust them all?

AR: I arrange all of them, all three hundred. Our cleaning maid takes care of them.

Gala: How many years has this tennis drudgery been going on?

AR: Fourteen. I don't remember my first time on the court. I only remember that first we played with baloons, next with sponge balls. But I don't remember the first day.

Gala: Did anyone ask you in the beginning whether you wanted to spend so much time on the court?

AR: There were no such questions, because when you are a child, your parents decide about everything, in fact.

Gala: I know children who were throwing their rackets against the court, their violins against the floor, who were going away from the piano, who were leaving their parents with their parents' ideas.

AR: What would have I achieved if I throwed the racket against the court?

Gala: You could have been playing with dolls with peers...

AR: ...and smoke cigarettes in the street. No, thank you. My Dad was deciding about everything in the beginning, but the first years for me were just like having fun, a hobby. Now, it is a job.

Gala: When has it become a job?

AR: Since I have begun earning money. Three years ago.

Gala: So you passed the usual for teenagers period of revolt slaving on the courts of the world?

AR: I've been always revolting! I always have my own opinion, I always argue, when I don't like something. In airports, offices, and hotels, always I alone argue. And there are always lots of problems. I argue for everything! For disappearing reservations, for the lost luggage. But I don't sulk. I don't have to have a red carpet.

Gala: You don't behave like a star yet?

AR: Absolutely not! I just fight when I have to. Once we arrive with my sister to a hotel and there we get a bridal double bed, while I remember well that I booked a room with two single beds on the internet. So why does it have to be so?

Gala: I understand you, a tennis player must sleep well.

AR: I asked for another room, a lady in the reception sad "No". After a conversation she changed the room, of course. On the cour,t I am also able to get int argument if the umpire cheating. I won't tolerate it.

Gala: Do you remember John McEnroe who was arguing incessantly with umpires in the biggest tournaments and lost good reputation because of that. They considered him to be a spitfire.

AR: I get involved in fighting only when seeing flagrant injustice.

Gala: Your dad-coach's name is Robert, but here, on the court, everybody addresses him Piotr. What's the reason?

AR: Piotr is Dad's middle name. They also call my mother Kasia, who is officialy known as Marta. Kasia is her middle name as well. I don't know why my parents use their middle names instead of their first. I am Agnieszka Roma because we have lived for seven years in Germany, when my Dad worked and Roma was a popular name there.

Gala: Does your mom take part in the development of your career?

AR: She doesn't come from a family with sport traditions like Dad's family. Mom arranges the paper work: travel tickets, hotels, payments. Sometimes, I help her with arrangements conducted in English.

Gala: In what respect do you resemble her?

AR: I resemble rather my Dad, and Ula my Mom. Mom is caring and soothing. If it ever happened that there was something between us and Dad, she was able to bring back quiet, say something calming and motivating at the same time.

Gala: Your grandpa on the father's side was once a pretty good ice-hockey player, and later a sports teacher.

AR: ... still teaching! Our grandparents are proud of us, together with Grandma, they collect every newspaper cutting, file binders swell. Each succes of mine and Ula's enormously delights them. Grandpa also plays tennis.

Gala: All the time travelling, so you rather infrequently see each other.

AR:The tennis season lasts from January to October. During this period we rarely see each other.

Gala: Admit it honestly. It is the middle of Summer. Don't you want October come?

AR: During the last tournaments of the Autumn we all talk only about returning home. Well, every one wants to win, every one gives her 100%, and despite all of this, every one wants to return home.

Gala: What do you dream about then?

AR: About some quiet and about nobody wanting anything from me. Just to have some peace of mind. After two months abroad, I barely remember the look of my bedroom.

Gala: When have you been recently to cinema, theatre, concert?

AR: Three days ago, "Sex and the City". Very nice, recommended. And during the last Wimbledon, after the matches, organizers took as to the theatre to see the musical "Dirty Dancing". Lasted three hours. Super. When traveling I listen to the music a lot. Pop, Rock, R & B. During the tournament in Turkey there was a Kylie Minogue concert that started at 10 PM, and I was to play a match at 10 am the next day. No chance.

Gala: Did you win?

AR: And the whole tournament.

Gala: So it was worth not taking part in the concert. Do you have time for a boyfriend?

AR: I don't have anybody. My career I out first, I don't think about anything else. I am at the beginning of the road, and I must concertrate on the sport first of all.

Gala: Who is the hunk you train with?

AR: My colleague, Sebastian Rutka. When my sister is absent, he plays with me. He gets on very well.

Gala: Your worst tournament?

AR: There are such matches, that you waste a kilogram during a day. When there is a 40 degree Celsius heat and 100% of humidity, when a man baths in sweat after walking a few metres. The worst tournament was in Pattaya City, a beautiful spa resort in Thailand. Girls were fainting on the court. After a finished match I went into a swimming pool fully dressed and I stayed in it for 10 minutes to recover. I can't imagine how people are able to live there.

In Australia, on the other hand, where matches are suspended when temperature reaches 50 degrees Celsius, I was to play my second match at 11 am. I was waiting, because before me men played a 5 set match. They were vomitting on the court, one and then the other. Guys! A horror. After such matches, you sit in the changing room with ice to recall your own name.

Gala: Graf, Hingis, Sharapova, Williams sisters. Do you have any idols?

AR: In the past I admired them, but since I have been meeting them in changing rooms every week, it haschanged. They are just my colleagues, familiar faces.

Gala: And Kournikova? Paris Hilton of tennis? What do you think about her?

AR: To say the truth, she was never somebody to reckon with in professional sport, she didn't win a tournament, she wasn't at the top.

Gala: The Olympic Games are soon. What do you want win in Beijing?

AR: I'll play singles, and doubles with Marta Domachowska. We are close friends with Marta although we sometimes play against each other.

Gala: How long will you play professional tennis?

AR: I don't know. Brilliant Justine Hénin retired at the age of 24 in spite of her numerous successes. But some 36 year-old tennis players are still playing. I hope that after the end of my career I will have to do nothing.

Gala: Nothing? It will be boring.

AR: No, after so many years of playing tennis it will do me good. I hope I provide for myself playing tennis. But I don't know what will happen in 5 to 10 years. Injury is something that now I fear most. I am certainly going to play tennis for some years to come, to stay at the top and to increase my collection of the cups a bit.

A Rankings Shake-Up in Men’s Tennis

After the men’s singles event at the Australian Open notable for Roger Federer’s dominance and Rafael Nadal’s knees, the new rankings that came out Monday reflected both story lines.

After retiring during a quarterfinal match against Andy Murray because of a knee injury, Nadal fell to No. 4 from No. 2, his lowest ranking since May 2005. Nadal is expected to miss at least month because of a tear in his right knee.

Novak Djokovic, who lost in the quarterfinals to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, rose to No. 2 from No. 3, his highest ranking ever. He is followed by Andy Murray, the Australian Open runner-up.

With his victory in Melbourne, Federer secured his No. 1 position. It is his 268th week in the top spot, tying Jimmy Connors for third place in total weeks at No. 1. Federer will soon pass Ivan Lendl, who was No. 1 for 270 weeks. Pete Sampras holds the record with 286 weeks at No. 1.
